TP-5: Concussions and Vestibular Issues

Speaker

Concussions are known to cause dizziness and balance problems.  Unfortunately, vestibular diagnostic tests are highly variable in this population.  Less commonly performed tests, such as gaze stability and dynamic balance measures, are important for appropriate patient management.  This presentation will discuss current understanding of vestibular presentation post-concussion and what we can do to best evaluate patients clinically.  Discussion of pediatric and adult protocols will be provided.  Case examples will highlight the patterns of vestibular and balance dysfunction often noted in patients following concussion as well as expected recovery trajectories.

Learning Objectives:

  • To discuss the importance of vestibular testing post-concussion
  • To review relevant laboratory results
  • To discuss next steps regarding concussion testing protocol and management
