TP-6: Tired from Listening? Identification & Management of Listening-Related Fatigue

Speaker

In this presentation we will introduce the construct of listening-related fatigue and its relation to hearing loss. An overview of past  and current research examining associations between hearing loss and fatigue using generic fatigue scales. We will introduce attendees to the Vanderbilt Fatigue Scales (VFS’s)- a suite of recently developed measures specifically designed to quantify listening-related fatigue in those with hearing loss and other communication-related disorders and discuss how the scale can be used to identify those at risk for significant fatigue-related issues- i.e., those that may warrant additional follow-up or monitoring. Finally, we will discuss recent research evaluating strategies for managing, or preventing development of, listening-related fatigue associated with hearing loss. Broadly, the presentation has three main goal: 1) provide an overview of the construct of listening-related fatigue and its relevance to those with hearing loss; 2) introduce attendees to the Vanderbilt Fatigue Scales and describe how they can be used to identify individuals with severe listening-related fatigue who may warrant follow-up or monitoring; and 3) describe research-based and/or theory-driven approaches to mitigate fatigue-related issues for those at most risk for experiencing significant listening-related fatigue.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Will be able to describe the construct of listening-related fatigue.
  2. Will be able to administer and score at least one version of the Vanderbilt Fatigue Scales.
  3. Will be able to discuss possible interventions for reducing or managing listening-related fatigue.
