SA-5: Audiological Management of Children with Diabetes: Insights from a Scoping Review and Protocol Development

Speakers

Children with diabetes are at increased risk of developing progressive sensorineural hearing loss, underscoring the importance of standardized protocols for audiological monitoring. Early identification and intervention are critical to mitigating the impact of hearing loss on communication, language development, academic achievement, and overall quality of life. This presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of findings from a scoping review examining current evidence around the identification and management of hearing loss in children with Type 1 diabetes. This review synthesized literature using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology to describe existing clinical approaches and identify gaps in current audiological care practices. Findings underscore the importance of integrating hearing healthcare professionals within pediatric diabetes care teams to facilitate early identification and timely intervention. Despite growing recognition of the link between diabetes and hearing loss, inconsistencies in screening recommendations and limited interdisciplinary collaboration persist.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the risk factors and prevalence of progressive sensorineural hearing loss in children with Type 1 diabetes.
  2. Summarize key findings from a scoping review on existing clinical approaches for the identification and management of hearing loss in children with Type 1 diabetes, highlighting gaps in current audiological care practices.
  3. Discuss the role of hearing healthcare professionals in interprofessional pediatric diabetes care teams and examine key factors in audiological monitoring to enhance early identification and timely intervention.
