This session will explore how audiologists can contribute meaningfully to vestibular care through evidence-informed assessment, clinical reasoning, and effective patient education. Drawing from clinical and teaching experience, Dr. Ioan Curca will highlight approaches to identifying and managing common vestibular complaints seen in audiology practice.
Attendees will be introduced to foundational concepts in vestibular function and shown how simple, clinic-friendly tools can be used to assess vestibular involvement. Emphasis will be placed on the role of audiologists in recognizing when to intervene, when to refer, and how to support patients through clear communication and counseling. Case-based examples will be used to connect theoretical knowledge to practical clinical decision-making.
The session will also consider how vestibular competencies can be developed through structured training. Simulation-based strategies and applied teaching models from Western University will be shared to illustrate ways to enhance student and clinician preparedness for vestibular assessment.
This session is designed for audiologists working in a variety of settings, whether new to vestibular care or looking to expand existing services. Participants will leave with practical ideas and strategies to support vestibular assessment, referral decision-making, and professional development in this growing area of audiology.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize common vestibular symptoms and conditions relevant to audiology practice.
- Apply simple, clinic-friendly assessment tools to support vestibular screening and patient triage.
- Identify red flags and referral pathways for patients presenting with dizziness or imbalance.
- Incorporate practical strategies to support vestibular skill development through teaching, mentorship, or simulation.
